Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 1st and 17th New Hampshire Infantry Regiments, 1st New Hampshire National Guard Infantry Regiment, 5th Maine National Guard Coast Artillery Company, 8th Coast Artillery Company, Fort Williams, Maine, 18th Coast Artillery Company/Coast Defense Command of Portland, Maine, Battery B/54th US Coast Artillery Regiment. General description of the collection: The Walter L. Cutter papers include various materials on Cutter's service with the 17th US Infantry in th Philippines (1899-1902) and with various coast artillery units in the United States and France (1917-1919). Includes copies of the soldier newspaper The Jolo howler and a fictionalized account of soldier life entitled Hank Harkins-recruit. WWI items includes diaries (1918-1919); clippings, progaganda literature and poems. A few newspaper clippings are found on WWII. Several items also deal with his service with the 1st New Hampshire Infantry in the Spanish-American War. Some pieces concern the Civil War particularly activities of Union veterans and associations.
